Noam Chomsky has probably been the most influential single individual in my political make up. His influence isn't only confined to me. He single handedly revolutionised the field of linguistics, provided major contributions the fields of computer science and psychology, was a very early outspoken critic of the Vietnam war, was involved in helping release the Watergate Papers, and has published over 50 books, given countless lectures and is apparently the most quoted American in the English language.
It has been said to not be aware of Chomsky is to court genuine ignorance, and certainly for me it was true, it wasn't until I read Chomsky that I pulled together a cohesive world view. I'd encourage you to enlist the help of Chomsky in forming (or challenging) your own world view. His political and historical analysis is always sharp, but also try and find something he says about anarchism as well. It was through Chomsky that I was exposed to an intelligent form of anarchism, and came to embrace it almost because I agreed so closely with his principles that "whatever he is, I must be".
On this site you can choose from video, audio and text. I'd also encourage you to go to video.google.co.uk and look up Manufacturing Consent, a documentary made about him.
